Custom Retainers

Retainers are custom-made oral appliances designed to retain the alignment of your teeth after you complete your orthodontic treatment. As you age, your teeth can start to shift, and your retainer is made to keep your teeth in place. We want you to benefit from your hard work and your brand-new, healthy smile for your entire lifetime! There are three types of retainers available to you:

  • Hawley retainers contain a plastic body that use wires and clasps. This type of retainer can cover the roof of your mouth to retain your upper arch or lay along the tongue side of your teeth to retain your lower arch.
  • Clear retainers are made of clear plastic and are designed to fit snugly over your teeth. Since they are clear, they are more discreet than Hawley retainers.
  • Fixed retainers, also known as permanent or bonded retainers, are permanently attached to the back of your teeth to prevent movement. This kind of retainer can only be removed by a dental professional.

Once you complete your orthodontic treatment, our dentists can help you determine what kind of retainer will work best for you and your smile. To learn more about retainers, please contact our office today to schedule an appointment with us.

About Us
How long will I need to wear my retainer?

The length of time you need to wear your retainer will depend on your individual circumstances. In most cases, Excel Dentistry patients need to wear their retainer for at least several months. In some instances, patients wear a retainer for up to a couple years.

Are retainers uncomfortable to wear?

Retainers may feel tight and unpleasant to wear at first, but this usually goes away within a few days. If you continue to experience discomfort, contact Excel Dentistry. Dr. Modesto-Garrido or Dr. Modesto may need to adjust the fit of your retainer.

How should I take care of my retainer?

Many retainers can be brushed gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild soap or toothpaste. However, some retainers are best maintained using a specially formulated cleaning solution for the specific retainer. Other retainers may be cleaned using a vinegar and water solution. Our Glen Rock, NJ team will provide you with cleaning instructions or solutions depending on your retainer type and brand.
